Clear Over Clever: Marketing Basics
When someone discovers your business, how quickly can they figure out what you actually do?
It’s easy to get caught up in creating the perfect tagline, clever slogan, or catchy description. But clever marketing only works when your audience already understands what you’re selling. If they have to stop and decode your message, you may lose them before they ever learn more.
Being able to explain what you do in one clear sentence is a skill, and it’s one every founder should practice.
Start with the basics:
We help [specific customer] do [specific thing] so they can [specific result].
For example, instead of:
“Making every moment a little sweeter.”
Try:
“We make custom dessert boxes for birthdays, corporate gifts, and special events.”
The first might sound better, but the second tells a potential customer exactly what the business does.
Your marketing can have personality. It can be creative. It can even be clever. But clarity has to come first.
Try This
Look at your website homepage, Instagram bio, or latest flyer. Could someone who has never heard of your business understand what you offer within five seconds?
If not, simplify it.
Clear gets understood. Understood gets remembered. Remembered gets customers.
